Quoting Island Dog,   Just an update. We are currently working on the system that will resolve the issues that have come up in this post, and should prevent any activation issues for users who want to install on their home PC and laptop for instance. We're hoping to get the changes made as soon as possible and just wanted to keep you updated to let you know we are working on a resolution. We'll update once everything is set. We're sorry for the troubles, and if you have any issues please feel free to contact support or let me know if I can help.

Update:

We have completed our server-side changes to relax the activation limits for Fences and Object Desktop subscriptions.

You can continue to use version 2.13. If you have any issues or concerns, please contact support at support@stardock.com.

Thank you for your patience!

Yup, but Reply #1 from Island Dog makes me pissed off.

And he is also from Stardock!

No sweat. Sorry about the inconvenience.  I have a meeting this week to expedite the changes.

Here on the forums, we get to talk to our core (well IMO our core) user base. But in terms of raw sales, it's usually from big companies ordering lots of copies and the enterprise team kept running into situation where a "big" company would order * $4.99 copy and put it on 3,500 machines.  But in trying to address that, they forgot to keep in mind the people who want it on their work machine, home machine, laptop, etc. We don't expect those customers to have to purchase multiple copies.

Which part of that isn't being understood?

He replied with the policy correct to the time of his reply. He did so politely and factually.

Why should that irritate you?

While it's certainly true that he works for Stardock and administrates this site, he doesn't set policy on Stardock's software. Therefore, it is irrational to expect Island Dog to have responded in any other way.

frogboy is his employer, and it is he who sets policy. He graciously changed the policy and explained why individual subscribers unfortunately fell between the chairs. He even did that twice.

Personally, I think you should edit your response, and/or apologize.

*edit: Sorry, Fuzzy...I was responding before your reply appeared.

Changes in the EULA without prior, written, letter of intent to paying customers where the changes suddenly deny paying customers a reasonable "fair use" installation?

Oh, bad business Stardock. Bad business.

You do know that even Microsoft allow you to install Windows on both a stationary and a portable device? Little Stardock and their little tweak? Not so much. Greed is ugly.

It sure looks like Stardock is losing money and need to add server level copy protection instead of actually, you know, make people want to buy their products.

First sell of Multiplicity, then do typical accountant/investor changes in their software/licenses to - in their mind - force people buy more licenses because they're bleeding money? Makes me wonder if Stardock is close to Chapter 11? (Bankruptcy)

Do you want people to crack their copies? Because that's how you get pirated software.

I've bought everything in Stardock's program inventory, but this makes me want to uninstall everything. Stick to the EULA you sold us the products on, Stardock.

Every single company that has made changes like this before have 1) given advance information to customers, both new and old 2) offered refund for affected products.

Yes. I know post #16. But that's just some poor schmuck in Customer Relations trying to piss on a fire... They didn't understand or care enough about their customers to inform us prior to the changes and they should've known and cared.

I won't apologize for something that's illegal.

He doesn't talk about that the eula has being changed. Just talk about it like that this for years so.

His repons was 2 premature. In fact he shoud apologize

Why don't you ask that "poor schmuck in Customer Relations"? I have a hunch he knows something about that.

What I think is being missed here is the fact that the EULA was changed a long, long time ago. (And we were notified at various times and in various locations of the changes)* The only thing "new"  is the mechanism for enforcing it, which by the looks of things, needs a bit more tuning.

*And even then we were told they were flexible on the one machine, one license clause.

While it may be an inconvenience, it's hardly the end of the world. How about responding to the situation as adults.

on Jun 22, 2014

Nah........they won't respond in other way than "diss" the company of which they bought software from. That's business. People always felt entitle/privilege to cry wolf when something is not on their expectations after the purchase. Well, the simple way would be just ignored them and kept those loyal customers who do really care and give some leverage to improve on sale part. IMHO.

Just to quickly address the EULA point, I believe the EULA on the vast majority of the products has said the same thing for years now, it is just nobody ever reads the things when they install products.  For Fences I suspect it changed when it moved from the $19.95 product to being $9.99 which would be when Fences 2 came out.  Also unless it changed recently the Microsoft EULA for Windows is one license per machine.  This isn't the case with Office though which certainly used to be along the lines of one desktop and one laptop.

I should probably also make clear that the products already had activation and the activation system was changed in this release of Fences to add in support for a customer to deactivate a machine from within the software as well as an overhaul of the update prompt system.  These are things that have been requested from customers.  Unfortunately as with all new things there are some teething issues and as Brad has stated in post number 16 (he is the company owner BTW) there should be changes coming.

Regarding Multiplicity, that has not been sold off.  Edgerunner is a Stardock owned new venture whose aim is to take some of the software which does not fit into the core games or desktop enhancement software and promote it.

The only thing that has ever been sold off was the Impulse games platform which was sold a few years ago to GameStop.  The money from that has been invested in the Stardock Strategic Investment fund which is funding some of the new upcoming games and if you search online you should see talk of this.  It is fair to say Stardock are nowhere near chapter 11!

Anyway the point is the owner of the company has indicated that there are changes coming to the activation in order to address the concerns in this thread and whilst some of us might have preferred that it was done last week, it is generally better not to mess with things just before a weekend especially with a Steam games sale on at the time.

I cannot say what the changes will be exactly yet, but I have expressed my views to those who do the deciding and Brad has asked that you stay tuned for news.  I would assume he will post in this thread once changes have been made.  If you are experiencing significant issues due to this I would suggest contacting support as they may be able to assist in the short term.

"That poor schmuck in Customer Relations" is actually the CEO of Stardock.

When people request others to refer to post #16 it is not to be placated by 'some poor schmuck'.

You will NOT get a more direct and real response than what is stated in #16.

You CAN believe me....

Re  Microsoft and it's product licencing...I have 2 'main' computers....and between them they have 9 OS product licences, not '1'.

When you run Virtual machines.....

Guys, let's be patient and wait for the official response . This is Stardock after all and they have always put the customers first in the past. There's no reason to start doubting them yet or to mob them with torches and pitchforks.

Yes, and since you read that post you know that I'm referring to them correcting the issue a.k.a. the official response for which I'm suggesting we wait.

on Jun 23, 2014

I am also waiting for the issue to be resolved...

on Jun 23, 2014

This issue is effecting me as well. I submitted a tech support ticket over the weekend, but I have not had a response yet. My hard drive crashed last week, I got my system back up and running over the weekend and formatted the drive, and reinstalled Fences 2.0. Then I realized that the Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center activation was screwed up, so I had to format it again and start installing everything over from scratch.

It was only then that I discovered I could not reinstall Fences 2.0. Ugh.

Everything else (Start 8, etc.) was fine. I've never had a problem like this with a Stardock product before, and I've been using Object Desktop since back when it was first developed for OS/2.
